Hardev Chauhan is an artist whose work is inspired by his life as both a farmer and a tailor. His connection to art began in childhood, watching his father draw lines for work and doing the same himself. Over time, he started using materials like cloth and farming tools in his art, turning them into symbols that tell stories about his past and daily life. He paints using both canvas and mixed media, choosing colors, sometimes transparent, watercolor, sometimes bold, based on what the artwork needs. His art focuses on things like cotton, wheat, maize, and groundnut, showing how these natural materials are grown and how they are used in everyday life, like turning cotton into cloth. Through his paintings, Hardev wants people to think about how farming and tailoring are connected, and how important natural resources are to our lives. His work is personal and emotional, and he hopes viewers can enjoy and connect with the beauty and meaning behind each piece.

Happy Earth Day!!! We have some events with @detroitfashionunited coming up to celebrate. 🌎 Join us for a Zine Workshop this Sunday at 12 - 2pm at Neighborhood Art School (82 Clairmount St).

For $10, participants will learn about zine history, discuss fast fashion and sustainability developments, and create their own collage zines using the provided materials. The workshop offers a creative space to reflect on Fashion Revolution Week through art!

The Boca de Nigua sugar mill stands as a remnant of colonial history and resistance, once a site of slavery and rebellion. This series of sugar mills by artist Digno Roa was recreated on cane paper, a sustainable material made from sugarcane waste, to connect history with eco-conscious artistry. Fire, once used to erase records, now reconstructs memory—transforming destruction into preservation.

By using cane paper to depict these histories, the medium itself becomes part of the message—a reclaimed artifact of resilience and remembrance. Fire, like history, can consume or illuminate. Here, it does the latter, restoring narratives once meant to be erased.

Saint, an up-and-coming designer from Florida, caught our eye at the East Coast Fits streetwear pop up. His creative process involves repurposing fabric scraps from previous projects, like distressing a flag, painting it, then sewing it onto a jacket.

Mira Musank is a Bay Area designer who blends sustainability with culture. Her “Accidentally Boro” silk shirt shows that a deconstructed, damaged silk shirt can be reborn, but it also asks questions like, how much control do we really have over broken or damaged products? Fast fashion silk shirts require resources, such as land for silkworm farms, 10 gallons of water per shirt, hours to raise silkworms, labor for harvesting and processing silk, and time to cut and sew shirts.

“I accidentally bleached the silk shirt, and the fibers started to disintegrate. Then I purposely ruined it even more with color discharge solution so the colors look uneven,” Musank said.

Musank incorporated cotton scraps, printed silk, polyester organza, lace, and embroidery floss for this piece.
